Managing Portfolio Risk

Two advisors discussing a portfolio report

Risk is not something to be removed from a portfolio — it is something to be sized, understood and paid for. The question is never “how do I avoid losses?” but “which losses can I live through without abandoning the plan?”

We start every mandate by separating three kinds of risk: the volatility a client can tolerate emotionally, the drawdown a portfolio can absorb structurally, and the shortfall risk of not reaching a goal at all. Those three rarely point in the same direction, and reconciling them is most of the work.

Sizing before selecting

Position sizing matters more than security selection for most long-horizon investors. A well-chosen fund held at the wrong weight will still derail a plan when markets turn.

Rebalancing as discipline

Scheduled rebalancing converts volatility from a threat into a source of return. It forces selling into strength and buying into weakness at a time when instinct argues for the opposite.
